At Arab Health 2025, Fujifilm showcased an innovative MRI system that is set to transform radiology practices in the UAE. The Oasis Velocity was presented for the first time in the region. This new machine promises to significantly improve the patient experience while maintaining the highest standards in diagnostic quality. In an exclusive interview with Rajesh Philip George, Senior Product Manager – CT & MR Modality Solution at Fujifilm in the region, we dive into the unique benefits of the Oasis Velocity and how it is addressing long-standing challenges in radiology.

A First for the UAE: The Introduction of the Oasis Velocity

For the first time in the UAE, Fujifilm has introduced the Oasis Velocity, a revolutionary open MRI system that is reshaping the way patients experience medical imaging. Traditional MRI machines are known for their confined spaces, which often cause significant anxiety for patients. This sense of discomfort has long been a challenge in radiology, with many patients describing their MRI experience as “going into a tunnel.” The Oasis Velocity, however, eliminates this feeling by being an open MRI machine, providing a much more relaxed environment for patients during scans.

“The open design of the Oasis Velocity allows patients to feel at ease, reducing the claustrophobic sensation typically associated with MRI examinations. So, patients experience less anxiety, leading to better cooperation during the procedure. This, in turn, improves the quality of the imaging, as patient movement is minimized, yielding clearer diagnostic results.”

Open MRIs are not new. But what sets the Oasis Velocity apart from other open MRI machines is its remarkable imaging power. While many open MRIs provide a lower magnetic strength (around 0.4 to 0.5 Tesla), the Oasis Velocity delivers equivalent image quality to that of a 1.7 Tesla conventional MRI. This means exceptional patient care without compromising the diagnostic capabilities.

Why the Oasis Velocity is a Game-Changer for Radiology

The Oasis Velocity’s groundbreaking features extend far beyond comfort. It also addresses critical issues in radiology, such as imaging time and accessibility for patients of various body types.

Faster Scanning Times

One key advantage of the Oasis Velocity is its faster scanning capabilities. Using the latest AI technology, the machine significantly reduces the time required for scans, say Mr. Philip George:

“A complete brain MRI, which typically takes 16 minutes with conventional machines, can now be completed in less than 5 minutes. This efficiency is not only appreciated by patients, but also by medical professionals who benefit from the reduced workload and faster turnaround time.”

Bariatric Patients

In addition to speed, the Oasis Velocity is designed to accommodate bariatric patients, a group that is often underserved by traditional MRI machines. Many MRIs can only handle patients weighing up to 200 kg, but the Oasis Velocity can comfortably accommodate patients up to 300 kg.

“This is possible due to the machine’s open design, which allows the patient’s body to relax naturally, and the fact that the scan table is 83 cm wide. As a result, the patient’s stomach has room to flatten on the table, allowing them to feel comfortable and relaxed. They do not experience the uncomfortable compression that occurs in more traditional MRI systems.”

Pediatrics

Another standout feature is the machine’s motorized table, which assists operators in positioning patients without physical strain. This also proves valuable for pediatric imaging, where children may be anxious or unable to follow instructions. The Oasis Velocity’s open design allows parents to stay with their children during the scan, reducing stress and the need for sedation.

Technological Advancements and the Future of MRI

Beyond these features, the Oasis Velocity employs AI to ensure image quality despite patient movement. Radiologists often face challenges when scans are compromised by patient movement, but AI technology works to enhance the clarity of the images, providing more accurate results.

In addition to its patient-friendly features, the Oasis Velocity is built on cutting-edge technology that addresses key operational concerns. One such concern is the consumption of helium, which is essential for cooling MRI magnets. Traditional MRI systems require regular helium refills, but Fujifilm’s Oasis Velocity features a zero-boil technology, which eliminates the need for helium top-ups throughout the system’s lifespan. This not only makes the system more sustainable but also reduces operational costs for healthcare facilities.

The Oasis Velocity is also user-friendly, designed with both patients and healthcare professionals in mind. Radiologists and technologists will appreciate its ease of use, as the machine requires minimal intervention.

“With a simple push of a button, the patient is positioned, and the scan begins. The entire process, including a brain MRI, can be completed in just seven minutes, ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow in busy medical settings.”

The coil used in the Oasis Velocity is lightweight, reducing both patient discomfort and the burden on operators. It can be adapted for various imaging needs, from brain scans to full-body examinations.
