In a world characterized by the increasing prevalence of highly complex, multi-causal diseases (“civilization diseases”), conventional medicine too often fails to deliver long-lasting healing. Instead of seeking advice from experts dedicated to a particular area of medicine, secondary care-seekers nowadays often consult with more holistically thinking health experts, seeking interventions that treat root causes of diseases instead of specific symptoms.
Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM), often also referred to as medical laser therapy or low-level laser therapy, is one of the fastest growing of such interventions. Strong scientific evidence for its efficacy in improving mitochondrial function, reducing inflammations and oxidative stress, supporting cellular and immune function, as well as speeding up recovery and tissue healing has been published. By supporting these essential body functions and improving corresponding biomarkers, PBM enhances the body´s self-healing capacity. Inspired by these findings, academia´s interest in PBM is rising significantly every year.

By the end of 2023, almost 7.000 PBM studies were published, among them approx. 2.200 on humans. Cutting-edge organizations like NASA and some of the world´s leading universities contributed and significantly helped to legitimize the therapy. Over the last few years, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued official recommendations to use PBM for the treatment of various sorts of pain, frozen shoulder, oral mucositis or tendonitis. The intravenous application of PBM is even on the WADA doping list, given its efficacy for the improvement of sports performance.
All these developments not only led to the integration of medical PBM devices into many integrative medical clinics but also to the development of PBM-home-use products that are usually used complementary to other therapies. The medical applications include a wide range of conditions such as immune system disorders, metabolic disorders, fatigue syndromes, neurodegeneration, mood disorders, or autoimmune diseases.
There is a particular use case for chronic diseases that did previously not respond to other interventions. Home-use PBM devices have become extremely famous in the health-conscious biohacking and performance-improvement community to support well-being, improve sports performance, and prevent becoming sick.
The “Endolight Band” by Weber Medical is one of the most sophisticated of such use-at-home-PBM devices. It irradiates the blood that circulates in the radial and ulnar arteries on the user´s wrist with blue, green, red, and infrared lasers, as well as a yellow light LED. Light receptors that are present in abundance in our cells absorb the multiple colors of light. The absorption process subsequently activates multiple pathways through which signaling cascades occur, resulting in the above-mentioned health benefits and beneficial long-term protein expression changes.
The official recommendation is to use it for 30 minutes every day. Its ergonomic design makes it not only very easy to travel with but also allows one to use it during almost every task, unlike many other home-use PBM devices such a larger panels or full-body irradiation mats. Different modes allow the user to select between more activating and more relaxing effects. Users can also choose between 4 intensity levels (25/50/75 or 100 %).

In a first published study, the Endolight Band enhanced regional blood flow from 73-76% pre-intervention to 77-85% during intervention and to 74-79% post-intervention. In unpublished studies, a significant effect on weightlifting power and endurance was observed, as well as an activation of the parasympathetic nervous system by the “recover mode.”
