Your Smartphone as Ophthalmoscope

While medical apps are gaining traction in doctors’ offices and hospitals, the next big thing for medical professionals may well be add-ons for smartphones. One intelligent example is the pluggable ophthalmic lens from the Italian company, D-Eye. To use it, a physician just needs to mount a bumper on his/her smartphone and attach a magnetic lens.

Through the D-Eye app, a doctor focuses on a patient’s eye to start recording either high-definition videos or images of the interior of the eye. The procedure detects multiple conditions, such as glaucoma or blood vessel abnormalities. The only requirement is that pupil diameter must be at least 2 mm.
D-Eye works with the Apple iPhone 5, 5s and 6, and the Samsung Galaxy S5 and S6. For people (a veterinary edition is also available), each device (lens+bumper) costs 395 euros.
