MedicalExpo’s i-NOVO Design award nominees included the degree° wearable thermometer for children by Munich-based cosinuss°. The firm calls its device “the world’s first wearable in-ear thermometer.”

Designed for kids running a fever, it monitors temperature continuously and sends an alert to a parent’s smartphone when it goes too high or rises too fast. The goal is to avoid febrile seizures, especially at night, and to alleviate parental stress. The degree° app graphs the wearer’s temperature curve, supplies general information on fevers and indicates possible treatments, as well as identifying nearby pharmacies.

The company claims its patent pending measurement technology is accurate to ±0.1°C. Smooth, contoured and weighing just over five grams, the unit is comfortable to wear. Data transmission—on demand or threshold-triggered—uses low-energy Bluetooth to reduce radiation exposure. Rechargeable battery life exceeds five days. Degree° is currently at the prototype stage.
