Green Light for the TandemLung

The Pennsylvania-based company CardiacAssist received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance  in March for its new product, the TandemLung oxygenator. The device acts exactly like an artificial lung by infusing the blood with oxygen and removing carbon dioxide.

After its TandemHeart pump was cleared for use with an oxygenator in 2011, CardiacAssist started to work with experts on the design of TandemLung in order to reduce the complexity of cardiopulmonary bypass technology. The oxygenator which features radial flow technology is designed to make extracorporeal life support “faster and more accessible,” the company says.

Every year 300,000 North American patients experience an acute cardiac or respiratory event requiring emergency intervention. According to CardiacAssist, only a small portion of them benefited from advanced life support (like the Tandem products) due to the complexity of deploying this technology.
