This year’s MEDICA conference featured a range of innovative products. Among them, Prima’s Floome pocket breathalyzer was nominated for a MedicalExpo i-NOVO Design award.

According to the manufacturer, the unit measures blood alcohol level via the same sensor used by law enforcement. Users plug the device into a smartphone, launch the Floome application, rotate the mouthpiece and blow into it. A red screen indicates an alcohol level exceeding the legal limit of the user’s current location.

After entering gender, age, height, and weight, the app will estimate the time required for the alcohol level to drop below the limit. The app also can find nearby taxis. Floome’s margin of error is ±0.075 g/L. The unit is available in black or red, and the app can be downloaded from various online stores. It is compatible with devices running iOS7, Android 4.2.2 or Windows Phone 8.1 or later.
